Bernardus Lodge & Spa

Carmel Valley, CA

Rich with handcrafted details, soft muted tones and warm mixed metals, the design of the Bernardus Lodge & Spa villas and suites reflects the luxe yet relaxed atmosphere of Carmel Valley, California. Oakland-based architecture and design firm Arcsine was tapped to design  the guestroom baths as well as source additional furnishings for the guestroom suites for a total of eight new buildings consisting of 14 suites and two villas.

Walking into the villas, guests discover hammered bronze, antique silver and brass details against a metallic, textured wall covering. Plum and warm orange hues punctuate the neutral color scheme of the suite common area, while all eyes rise to an elegant iron chandelier by Arteroirs suspended in the room’s center. Each living room, bedroom and terrace has its own fireplace, adding natural light and warmth to the interiors. Guests can lounge on a king-size canopy bed with an airy frame of weathered oak, with a stunning view of the wine country landscape.

Arcsine’s design of the bath area and private terrace features walls of celadon green tiles handcrafted by Fireclay. The inherent variation of the hand crafted tile is further accentuated by a delicate tonal variation in the crackled glaze. A marble counter top houses a textured , round white basin. The vanity doors feature a custom laser cut copper panel in an abstract leaf pattern, a delicate detail that invokes the natural elements of the outdoors. A freestanding textured copper tub invites guests to relax before floor-to-ceiling windows peering out onto a private terrace, secluded by walls of creeping fig and even featuring an additional outdoor shower. Organic shapes and soft, textural details in luxurious materials define the space.

The design feels clean, residential and elegantly relaxed, ideal for business retreats, couples, weddings and family vacations alike.
